West Dowling Road Extension in Comment Period

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The West Dowling Road extension project is currently taking comments.

At first glance, the schematics for the project look pretty good for bicyclists

and pedestrians. There is a 6 foot wide shoulder and a multi-use path.

The shoulder however WILL NOT be striped as a bike lane if DOT gets its way.

DOT is asserting that they will not paint bike lanes unless the Municipality

agrees to maintain the on-road bike lane painted striping and markings.

However, DOT has no such requirements for the other on-road stripings for

the motor vehicle lanes. This is a DOT project and a DOT maintained road.

Federal Department of Transportation policy set out by

Secretary LaHood that requires state DOTs to treat bicycle and pedestrian

transportation equal with motor vehicle transportation.

You can learn more about the project here and
http://www.dowlhkm.com/projects/wdowlingroad/home.htm

Submit your comments here. They can be brief. Just let them know they need to

include bike lanes. DOT has already stated that they haven’t heard from many

folks on this project. Lets change that!

Celebrate the Approval of the Anchorage Bicycle Plan April 20th

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Come join us on Tuesday April 20th from 6PM to 8PM at the Midnight Sun Brewery
to celebrate the unanimous passage of the Anchorage Bicycle Plan and kick off
the spring commuting season! We have a lot of great events planned for the
summer, but these events need volunteer support to make them happen. So we’re
going to have sign up sheets for each of our volunteer driven events, and the
first 30 people to sign up get a free beer, courtesy of the Midnight Sun
Brewery!

We need volunteers for our Bike Valet Program which provides free and secure
bike parking at some of Anchorage’s biggest summer events. We also need help
manning the Coffee And Treats stations on the last Friday of each month through
the summer.

If you are not sure what bike parking entails, check out our “Events” page
for a description and a list of all the events. Also, we are always looking for
volunteers with experience in grant writing, graphics design, and corporate
outreach.

Join us Tuesday to raise a glass and toast the Anchorage Bicycle Plan and the
great summer ahead of us!

Midnight Sun Brewing Company is located in South Anchorage at 8111 Dimond Hook
Drive, a couple blocks North of Home Depot on Abbott Rd. Heading east on Dimond
Blvd past Seward Hwy and Sandlewood Place, get in the left turn lane then do
“the squiggle” to remain on E. Dimond Blvd. Turn left on Petersberg Street.
Turn right on Dimond Hook Drive…its the big brown block bldg.

We of course encourage people to go by bike. if you are curious how to get
there from the north, and would prefer to use low volume neighborhood roads,
check out this posting on our website:

2010 ABC Bike Swap a Success

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

The 2010 Arctic Bicycle Club bike swap was a success with hundreds of people attending the event at the AT&T Sports Complex in Anchorage.

The event immediately took off from the time of setup and we hope to adjust for that next year in our advertising. The peak of the event was about 1:30pm when there were about 4-5 rows of gears and people completely filling the AT&T Complex’s soccer field.

By 2:15pm inventories started running low for people who brought stuff to sell and people started packing up and by 3pm the event was essentially over.

Next year we plan on a shorter setup time, with access to the setup period mostly restricted to the bike club and any shops wanting to setup that require more time to do so. Then the doors will open for the ‘free for all’ event.

Those asked who brought stuff to sell were happy with the results of the sale and many people walked away happy with a purchase.

Thank You all who participated.

Alaska Randonneurs REI Presentation / Information Seminar

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Alaska Randonneurs,

Rando-Info night will be at the Anchorage REI this Tuesday, 4/6 at 6:00PM.
http://www.rei.com/event/3777/session/4448

Bob Voris (PBP ancien ‘99) and I will introduce you to the basics of riding brevets. If you’re new to randonneuring, Rando Info Night will help get you started. We’ll cover all the basics, such as: Rules, French Words, History, Riding Styles, Contrôles, Brevet Cards, Equipment, Nutrition, Training, and more. There will be plenty of time for questions too.

The Kenai 200K brevet is coming right up. It’s a wonderful course, a great season-opener, and the flattest one on the calendar. It’s early in the season for Alaska riders, but if you can ride 100K at this point, you most likely can roll for 200K.

If you’ve never made the effort to ride the Kenai roads, you’re really missing out. The course is stunningly scenic and varied, and the roads are very low traffic; at least until the fish start running in July. If you’re aiming to ride the Clean-Air, the Eklutna Challenge, the Fireweed, etc. come join us for some high-quality training miles. Last year’s brevet attracted riders from Homer, the Mat Valley, and Anchorage, as well as local Kenai riders.

All the ride information for the Kenai 200K brevet, including links to the course map, cue-sheet, start time/location, etc., may be found at:
http://sites.google.com/site/alaskarandonneurs/Home/north-kenai-peninsula-200k-brevet

Last spring, the Redoubt Reporter did two nice articles about our Peninsula rides. Check ‘em out:

Looking forward to seeing you in Kenai!
